Security

API Authentication

The Hifisys API uses cryptographically secure, SHA-256 hashed API keys. Every inbound request must provide an active key via HTTP headers over HTTPS. Unauthenticated requests return HTTP 401 Unauthorized.

Method A: Custom Header (Recommended)

Pass your API key directly in the custom header:

X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY

Method B: Bearer Token

Pass your API key using standard Bearer authorization:

Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
Security Guideline: Keep Keys Confidential

Never commit API keys to version control repositories (Git) or expose them in client-side browser JavaScript. Always make API calls from backend server environments (e.g. Node.js, Laravel, Python, Go) or serverless functions.

Endpoint Structure

Base URL & Quickstart Example

All production requests are routed under the /api/v1 prefix:

https://hifisys.com/api/v1
Quickstart Request
# Check Platform Health
curl -X GET "https://hifisys.com/api/v1/health" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

# Authenticated Request Example
curl -X GET "https://hifisys.com/api/v1/hrms/employees" \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"
Traffic Management

Rate Limits & Quota Headers

Rate limiting prevents service abuse and ensures predictable quality of service. Every response from our API gateway includes four standardized headers informing you of your exact allowance in real-time:

Response Header Type Description
X-RateLimit-Limit Integer Maximum requests allowed per 1-minute rolling window for your tier plan.
X-RateLimit-Remaining Integer Remaining requests available in the current 1-minute window.
X-Quota-Monthly Integer Total monthly API calls allocated by your plan subscription.
X-Quota-Remaining Integer Remaining monthly API calls before month-end reset or quota top-up.
Response Standards

HTTP Status Codes & Error Formats

Our API uses standard HTTP response codes to indicate success or failure. In case of an error, a structured JSON body is returned detailing the error reason:

200 OK

Request completed successfully. Data returned in data payload.

401 Unauthorized

Missing, revoked, or invalid API key provided in request headers.

403 Forbidden

Key is valid, but plan does not have permission for the requested scope.

429 Too Many Requests

Per-minute burst rate limit or monthly consumption quota exceeded.

Standard Error Payload Example

{
  "success": false,
  "message": "Forbidden. Missing required scope entitlement: 'attendance:write'.",
  "error_code": "SCOPE_DENIED",
  "required_scope": "attendance:write"
}
Hardening

Security & Credential Lifecycle

  • Store in Environment Variables: Use .env or secrets managers (e.g. AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault) on backend servers.
  • Scope Principle of Least Privilege: Restrict client keys to the exact scopes needed (e.g. read-only keys for reporting dashboards).
  • Seamless Key Regeneration: If an API key is ever accidentally disclosed, use the Admin Console to regenerate it instantly.
